School Children train with WP & Boks
100 Children from a few local schools got a surprise visit from some of the Springbok rugby players at Overberg High School on Wednesday, the 12th of October while watching a special, open training session of the DHL Western Province Rugby team.
The children – from Overberg Junior and High Schools, Swartberg Junior and High Schools and The Glebe School in Middleton – had been invited to attend the training and autograph session with the DHL WP team by The Caledon Casino, Hotel & Spa and Club Newlands. The team’s visit was part of an ongoing initiative by The Caledon Casino, Hotel & Spa with Club Newlands which aims to make the game of rugby more accessible to young people from the local community.
As if that wasn’t enough of a treat, they also got to meet some of the South African rugby team players who just returned from the Rugby World Cup tournament in New Zealand.
“The children were delighted to see some of their rugby idols being put through their paces during the training session which was followed by an interactive autograph and chat session with the players. The surprise visit from the Springbok players was the cherry on top for the children. For most of the children, it was the first time they’d seen professional rugby players in training, not to mention getting up close and personal with them. It is a remarkable experience for any young rugby fan,” says Paul Campbell, General Manager at The Caledon Casino, Hotel and Spa.
Amongst the rugby stars who at the event were Schalk Burger, Bryan Habana, Conrad Jantjes, Deon Fourie, Jean de Villiers, Jaque Fourie, and JJ Engelbrecht.
The players attended a special VIP dinner Cocktail Function at The Caledon Casino, Hotel & Spa later that evening, and the DHL WP Province team competed in a Fun Slots Tournament against some of the casino’s VIPs.
