Advantages
From an advertising point of view, Radio has the following critical advantages over print media:
- It is immediate
- It requires no effort or skills on the part of the listener
- It can be easily accessed while driving, taking advantage of a captive audience
- It is flexible
- It is targeted
- It creates trust and loyalty
- It is affordable
There are three basic ways to take advantage of this advertising medium
1. Loose Spots
These are typically pre-recorded commercials that can include music and sound effects. The commercials are booked within time channels, but are not broadcast at specific times.
2. Feature Sponsorships
Features include the news, the eco report, the weather, the traffic report, the fishing report and the like. Specialised features can also be created and tailor-made for clients. These features, which are broadcast at specific times, deal with matters of interest to the listeners and create greater listener attention.
3. Competitions
Competitions create excitement and encourage listeners to keep listening to the station for the duration of the competition. Competitions also lend themselves to cross-media advertising. For example, a client wanting to drive traffic to a web site can place clues for the radio competition on that web site, encouraging customers to visit the site.
